Prof Michael Baker

Epidemiologist, University of Otago


Michael Baker is a public health physician and Professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington.
He is a member of the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 Technical Advisory Group (TAG).  Michael has taken a leading role in formulating New Zealand’s elimination strategy against this pandemic. He has established a programme of research on the epidemiology, prevention and control of Covid-19 in New Zealand and internationally (Co-Search) with support from the Health Research Council of New Zealand.
Michael has long-standing research interests in infectious diseases, environmental health, and housing and health. His research has contributed to improvements in infectious disease control, immunisation, food safety, and housing conditions.
He is an active media commentator and member of New Zealand’s Science Media Centre Advisory Board.  He has worked internationally with the World Health Organisation on a range of projects including the International Health Regulations, and Measles and Rubella elimination.
